Frequently asked questions

1. What exactly is an SMSF?

A Self-Managed Super Fund is your own trust, under your control, designed solely to provide retirement benefits for members or dependants.

2. Who can run an SMSF—and how many members can it have?

Anyone over 18 who hasn’t been disqualified can be a trustee. Up to 6 members / trustees allowed since July 2021.

3. Who do I contact to run a successful SMSF?

For investment advice contact a licenced Financial Advisor. For ATO compliance including audit, contact a registered Tax Agent and an Accountant.

4. Can my SMSF borrow to buy an asset?

Yes—Limited Recourse Borrowing Arrangement (LRBA) is allowed under strict compliance.

5. Who can help me run an SMSF?

You can do it yourself, but most trustees engage advisors, accountants, auditors to ensure compliance and add value.

6. What are my ongoing obligations as a trustee?

Trustees must: lodge annual returns, hold independent audits, maintain records, monitor investment strategy, run the fund for sole purpose, and stay within contribution caps. Speak to your accountant for more information.

7. What happens if I breach the rules or make bad choices?

Penalties include hefty fines, trustee disqualification, or termination of SMSF tax status. No government compensation for losses, fraud, or insolvency.

8. How do I access funds, and when can I withdraw?

Typically you must be 65 or meet a condition of release. Early access might be possible for hardship or compassionate grounds, limits apply. Speak to your accountant for more information.

9. Should I appoint a corporate trustee or individuals?

Individual trustees: simpler, but personal liability
